# Stablecoin tax in the UK: USDT, USDC and GBP values

For current UK tax calculations, a stablecoin is not automatically tax-free because it tracks a currency. Record swaps and disposals in pounds. July 2026 proposals would change eligible stablecoin treatment from 6 April 2027; do not apply a future exemption to earlier transactions.

## Key facts

## Does swapping bitcoin for USDT or USDC trigger tax?

A swap disposes of the bitcoin even if you never withdraw pounds. The sterling value received is the starting point for disposal proceeds. A subsequent USDT-to-USDC exchange is a separate event under the current cryptoasset rules. Keep the two legs, the time and the fees; an exchange balance labelled “USD” may represent either actual dollars or a token, with different records.
## Why a dollar peg can still produce a sterling gain

An illustrative investor buys 2,000 dollar stablecoins when each is worth £0.80 and sells them when each is worth £0.84. The sterling proceeds are £1,680 against a £1,600 starting cost: an £80 gain before fees and matching rules. A stable dollar price does not imply a stable GBP value. This example is arithmetic, not an assumed exchange rate or prediction.

Illustration: unchanged dollar token value, different GBP outcome

| Entry | Quantity | GBP per token | Total |

| --- | --- | --- | --- |

| Acquisition | 2,000 | £0.80 | £1,600 |

| Disposal | 2,000 | £0.84 | £1,680 |

| Difference before costs | — | — | £80 |
## The proposed April 2027 stablecoin change

HMRC published draft legislation on 13 July 2026 proposing a CGT exemption for eligible stablecoins and a change to certain interest-like returns. Its policy paper gives 6 April 2027 as the operative date. Eligibility and commencement matter: the proposal is not a blanket exemption for every token with “stable” in its name. Keep current and proposed rules separate and check the enacted legislation before filing a later year.

## Stablecoin interest, lending and de-pegging

Token price movements, returns paid by a platform and the legal rights of a lending arrangement are different questions. Record the return separately from changes in the value of the principal. A de-peg is not itself proof of a realised loss or a successful negligible-value claim. Save redemption restrictions, transaction history and evidence of any actual disposal.
## A stablecoin reconciliation checklist

Use the token contract and network as well as its ticker. Record the source of GBP prices, whether the exchange used dollars or tokens, each swap, any transfer fee and the purpose of a lending deposit. Reconcile quantities to your opening and closing balances before comparing software totals.

- Separate fiat USD balances from USDT and USDC holdings.

- Check native and bridged versions before treating them as one asset.

- Retain the price timestamp and exchange-rate source.

- Link the original acquisition to the later disposal.

## Visual explanation
Same dollar peg. Different pound value.
At acquisition: £1,600 (£0.80 per token).
At disposal: £1,680 (£0.84 per token).
£80 difference before fees and matching rules
Illustration only, not market data: 2,000 tokens at £0.80 cost £1,600; at £0.84 the proceeds are £1,680. UK calculations use sterling.

## FAQs
### Is USDT tax-free in the UK?

Do not assume that. Under current rules, disposals can produce gains measured in pounds. Proposed changes for eligible stablecoins have a future operative date and conditions.
### Do I use the dollar value or the pound value?

UK tax calculations use sterling. Keep evidence of the GBP value at the relevant transaction time, even when the trading pair is quoted in dollars.
