## Key facts
- Firm Checker = consumer-facing search; Financial Services Register = detailed record.
- Until October 2027 many firms show MLR crypto registration only.
- Full authorisation required from 25 October 2027 for in-scope activities.
- Warning list: unauthorised firms targeting UK consumers.
- Clone firms mimic authorised names — verify FRN number on official site.
- Authorisation does not mean FSCS protects your crypto.

## Firm Checker vs Register

Firm Checker (fca.org.uk/firms/firm-search) gives a simplified view — good for quick checks. Financial Services Register shows full permission schedule, approved persons, and regulatory history. Use both before large transfers.
## What to look for on a crypto exchange

Search exact legal entity name from terms of service. Confirm 'Cryptoasset exchange provider' or custodian permissions. Note registration date. Read any supervisory notices.
## MLR registered vs fully authorised

Today most UK-facing crypto firms are registered under money laundering rules only. From 25 October 2027, in-scope firms need full FCA authorisation with capital and conduct rules. During 2026–27 application window, check FCA announcements for applicant lists.
## Warning list and clones

FCA Warning List flags unauthorised firms. Clone scams use fake websites copying authorised FRNs. Always navigate to the firm via FCA register link, not Google ads.
## If a firm is not listed

Do not send money. Report to FCA consumer helpline. Overseas firms marketing to UK without approval may breach financial promotions rules.

## FAQs
### Is Firm Checker enough for due diligence?

It is the minimum. Also read risk warnings, understand custody terms, and never invest more than you can lose.
### What is an FRN?

Firm Reference Number — unique ID on the register. Verify it matches the firm's website.
